WBNA MEETING MINUTES
OCTOBER 14, 2009
The meeting was moved to the Community Room of 50 West Broadway as the MBTA
Credit Union building was again locked and no one was present to let us in.
We may have to switch the meeting room to a more reliable location.
The first item was a presentation by the Brennan Group regarding the rentals
at 50 West Broadway. They have 139 units and 2 commercial spaces. The commercial
spaces are not currently leased for any retail use. The rents range from $1800
for a studio to $3295 for a 2 bedroom with a den. The amenities include a Club
Room with kitchen facilities and a 24 hour Gym. There are 28 affordable units
and the lottery will be held on October 21st.
They are having an open house on Tuesday, October 27th from 5 to 8 and all WBNA
members are welcome.
BOARD UPDATE ITEMS
- Thanks to Michelle Oliver of the Court Square Press Building, we have a
new weeping cherry tree on the bridge.
- Thanks to the Corcoran Management Company for there generous financial donation
for plantings; we will have a need for many hands this Saturday from 10 to
2 to get the plants in the ground on the Broadway Bridge.
- Thanks to David Warner for taking his truck to a wholesaler of plants in
Connecticut which allow us to have many more plants for the money.
- We also need to thank the South Boston CDC and Donna Brown for the donation
of 300 bulbs to plant.
- A wine store is interested in a retail spot at 50 W Broadway and will contact
us if they are ready for a November presentation to the group.
- We need help on the Board of WBNA especially in the areas of financials,
marketing, fundraising and web site expertise. Please let us know if you have
the time to help us out.
- The elections for the Board will happen in November.
The Area 6 police were present with Ritchie Doherty and Paul Donovan. They
reported that the area appears very safe with no crime in the area for the last
month stats. If you see any suspicious activities in the area call 617-343-4911
on your cell phone. That number goes right to the Boston Police. The 911 number
goes to the State Police and takes longer for the Boston Police to respond to
a call.
Slainte
Slainte owners notified Bill Gleason on Tuesday they wanted to come to the meeting
and hear what our issues and concerns with there operation were. They are currently
in front of the Boston Licensing Commission for an extension of there Entertainment
License to allow for there operations on Sunday nights and for numerous violations.
The extension of the Entertainment License was put on hold until the Violation
hearings are held and decided on.
Bill presented our concerns regarding the increased number of incidents in the
area since they began operating certain nights under other promoters. The problems
specifically relate to noise, parking, fights and a general lack of feeling
safe by neighbors while walking dogs in the area and on Foundry St.
The owners stated that they had to have the extension of the license or they
would go out of business. They presented no other ideas of attracting business
and blamed the neighborhood residents for not supporting the restaurant and
bar.
It was suggested that they work on finding venues which will attract members
of the neighborhood to their establishment. The WBNA's position is to oppose
the extensions of the Entertainment License for Sunday nights but to also offer
any help and support to develop the operation into something the neighborhood
will see as a great addition the neighborhood.
A restaurant and bar management consultant (Vincent Conte Barfly Concepts)
name with over 20 years in the business has been provided by us to the management
in addition to suggestions at the meeting.
